With inflation heating up again, the Federal Reserve is in no position to consider lowering interest rates at its upcoming meetings. That’s according to a New York Fed survey gauging consumers’ expectations of the housing market, released Monday. Consumers are gearing up for even bigger increases compared to the expected rise in mortgage rates over the next year, the New York Fed survey found. The issue of rent affordability is particularly pronounced in New York City, where housing costs have always been notoriously high compared to other parts of the country, absent a brief respite during the pandemic.

FTC bans employers from using noncompete clauses

New York CNN —The Federal Trade Commission on Tuesday voted to ban for-profit US employers from making employees sign agreements with noncompete clauses. And – with one exception – it makes currently existing noncompete agreements unenforceable after the rule’s effective date, which is set at 120 days from the rule’s publication in the Federal Register. The rule, however, does allow currently existing noncompete agreements for senior executives to remain in force. The ban would apply nationwide, overriding state laws regarding noncompete agreements. In December of last year, New York State Governor Kathleen Hochul vetoed a bill passed by the state legislature to completely ban noncompete agreements in that state.

New York CNN —The National Labor Relations Board on Wednesday ruled that Home Depot violated the law by firing an employee after he refused to remove “BLM” (which stand for “Black Lives Matter”) messaging from his work apron. The NLRB ruled that Morales’ refusal to remove the messaging was a “protected concerted activity” to protest the racial injustice that took place at the store from August 2020 to February 2021. Tails.com, a dog-food supplier owned by Nestlé Purina PetCare, is planning to cut up to 55 roles, Business Insider has learned. In January, the company announced internally that it planned to commence a round of layoffs that could affect up to 55 staffers in the UK, per documents seen by BI. Per UK employment law, the company is required to offer a statutory redundancy package to those affected by the layoffs. While the company documents acknowledged that it had hired 22 new roles in the past six months, they also said hiring for any non-critical business roles had been paused since November 2023. Unlike previous rounds of layoffs, these ones are happening while many tech companies are producing good financial results .

Following Musk’s recent critical posts about DEI policies and racial discrimination lawsuits against Tesla, the electric car company has omitted all language regarding minority workers and outreach to minority communities in its 10-K filing with the SEC made January 29. In Musk’s eyes, DEI is “just as morally wrong as any other racism and sexism,” he tweeted in December.
